把go doing sth的目前分词理解为目的状语是不适合的。doing表示动作紧接着go的动作发生，分词的动作与go的动作首尾衔接，具备点时间上的同时性，所以用目前分词。假如go用一般目前时went, 则分词的动作就实质发生了。
go to do sth的语义中心在go上面，不定式的动作则是谓语动作之后才可能发生的动作，与谓语动作没同时性。不定式表示目的。
所以 He went there to buy sth. 假如没意料之外，不定式的动作一般会在以后发生。但也会某种缘由目的未能达成。作为读者，看到went somewhere to do sth. 不要考虑目的是不是达到，说话人没想叫你了解，你就不要追究。假如说话人想叫你了解，会说went there and bought something.
